PAUL REED SMITH GUITARS introduced the PRS ELECTRIC BASS in 2000 and around 72 were made in that first year. The overall style of the bass, with its bolt-on neck and flat fronted body, has been described by its designer Joe Knaggs as a combination of a Fender Jazz, a Music Man and a PRS bass. The swamp ash was initially available as a body wood option for these basses but otherwise they have alder bodies. They originally came with an LR Baggs piezo transducer and 3-band EQ, designed to complement the PRS Electric Basses' conventional magnetic pickups, but this piezo system was dropped in 2002.
