1910s Vega
The 1910s Vega roundback mandolin is a splendid example of early 20th-century craftsmanship, produced by the Vega Company of Boston. Likely made between the 1910s and as late as 1919, this mandolin carries the serial number 36487 and is distinguished by the engraving "Pettine Model" on its headstock plate. This designation refers to Giuseppe Pettine, a prominent composer, player, and mandolin teacher based in Rhode Island. It is believed that Vega crafted these mandolins for Pettine to offer to his students, making it a piece with both musical and historical significance.
This mandolin features ribs made from rosewood, providing a rich and warm tonal quality that enhances its sonic appeal. The top and fingerboard are richly adorned with elaborate pearl inlays, reflecting the meticulous artistry and attention to detail characteristic of Vega instruments. These ornate details not only add to the instrument's visual elegance but also signify the prestige associated with the Pettine Model. The 1910s Vega mandolin is not just an instrument but a testament to a rich tradition of mandolin music and craftsmanship.
