The Paul Reed Smith (PRS) McCarty Goldtop is a beautifully crafted instrument that pays homage to Ted McCarty, a pioneer in the electric guitar and musical instrument industry. Weighing in at 7lbs 11oz, this guitar strikes a perfect balance between substance and playability, making it an excellent choice for both studio sessions and live performances. The classic Goldtop finish exudes timeless elegance, making it a visually striking instrument that stands out on any stage or in any collection.
The McCarty model embodies the most up-to-date findings from PRS while looking back to the golden age of the guitar. This vintage-appointed guitar features a bound, 22-fret Pattern neck and a slightly thicker back, which enhances tone and sustain. The 58/15 LT treble and bass pickups, which have undergone the TCI (tuned capacitance and inductance) process, deliver vintage-style tones with exceptional clarity and focused midrange. Paired with a push/pull tone control and a 3-way toggle pickup switch, these pickups provide a complete palette of tones, making the McCarty model incredibly versatile.
The PRS McCarty is anchored by a PRS stoptail bridge with brass studs for added resonance and vintage-style tuners, ensuring excellent tuning stability and sustain. The nitro finish further enhances the guitar's tonal qualities, allowing the wood to breathe and resonate more freely. As Paul Reed Smith himself has noted, the updates to the McCarty model, including the bridge, nut, and tuners, make a significant difference in the guitar's tone, providing longer sustain and more character.
In the late 1980s, Paul Reed Smith called on Ted McCarty to consult with him on guitar design and production techniques. Ted not only served as a mentor but became a great friend to Paul and everyone at PRS. In 1994, PRS released the first McCarty, an instrument that incorporated the full spectrum of techniques and knowledge Paul had gained from Ted as well as his own experiences as a guitar builder.
In summary, the PRS McCarty Goldtop is a versatile and beautifully crafted instrument that offers a wide range of tonal options and exceptional playability. Its lightweight design, combined with high-quality components and innovative features, makes it a valuable addition to any guitarist's collection.
